Haiti Week Two

This week wasn’t quite as event-filled as last week. I’ve been out of the house quite a bit more this week.  One day I went with Shelley to pick up the kids from the English-speaking Christian school they attend. We took a walk and checked out a really nice house they might rent for a guesthouse.  That night we stopped at a grocery store, which was surprisingly nice. We went to dinner at the school principal’s family’s house. He grew up in Japan and made us some really yummy Japanese food. On Saturday Shelley took me to Petionville, which is the richer part of Port Au Prince. We took her motorcycle. It was my first time on one, and I have to say, it was pretty fun. She has a driver, so it was the three of us crammed on it. We stopped first at the Hotel Montana. The hotel itself was destroyed in the earthquake, but the beautiful grounds, pool and restaurant are still there. It’s way up on a hill and has a beautiful view of the city. The crazy thing is that there are these be

Week 1 in Haiti (Just the Highlights Version)

Click here for the detailed version of Week 1 in Haiti. In case you don’t want to read the novel that I just put up, here’s the highlights version of my first week’s blog: Traveling was smooth, though I didn’t get as much sleep as I wanted to on the flights. The airport was crazy and so are the roads in Port Au Prince but I made it safely. My traveling companions, the Geico Gecko and "Spot" The Pineapple Shelley’s family is great; the kids crack me up and Corrigan is a great cook. I always spend the evenings with them. I’m having tons of interesting conversations with them and learning a lot about the culture, religion, poverty, government of Haiti. Keziah at the pool Jackson has a lot of swag Yummy nachos Ember showing off her rock star style We went to the beach and stayed in a resort for one night for Shelley and my birthdays. It was beautiful and relaxing. I’m totally spoiled to have a room

Week 1 in Haiti (The Novel-Length Version)

Hello from Haiti! I’m finally getting around to blogging. I’ll just give a recap of what’s been happening since I left. Tuesday: Tuesday was travel day. I was so organized (my YWAM trip last year gave me serious packing skills!) that it only took me half of the day to get ready. My flight wasn’t until 7pm so I watched a movie to kill time. My mom made a delicious Italian dinner before sending me off. My complicated last name and flight schedule made things a little slow at the airport, but I still had about half of hour to kill before my first flight. The next stop was Seattle, where I had about two hours to snack and relax before the 5-hour flight to Newark. The flight to Newark was not the greatest. The controls on personal movie player thing were broken, so I couldn’t turn off the glowing screen. I eventually rigged up my motion sickness bag to cover it. So I unfortunately didn’t sleep very well or very long. I enjoyed seeing the NYC skyline flying in.
